Officers say the incident is a part of decades-old tribal rivalry over the mine in Darra Adam Khel space of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Islamabad, Pakistan – A minimum of 16 individuals have been killed and greater than 10 injured in a conflict between two tribes over the possession of a coal mine in northwest Pakistan.
Officers stated the incident late on Monday was a part of a decades-old tribal rivalry over the mine in Darra Adam Khel space of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan.
Native police officer Zahid Khan confirmed 16 deaths within the conflict between the realm’s Sunny Khel and Akhorwal tribes.
“A minimum of 11 members of the Sunny Khel tribe have been killed whereas 5 members of Akhorwal tribe have been buried final evening,” he advised Al Jazeera on Tuesday.
“The tribes concerned have agreed on a ceasefire and a jirga [tribal council meeting] was held to resolve the matter,” Khan added.
Jirga refers to a gaggle of elders belonging to varied tribes which is empowered to resolve intra-tribal rivalries and conflicts. It’s usually utilized in Pakistan’s northwestern areas that are dominated by the ethnic Pashtun inhabitants.

The police officer stated the members of the Sunny Khel tribe protested on a freeway within the space, demanding the arrest of the culprits.
