A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean southeast of New Caledonia, triggering a tsunami warning, US monitoring businesses mentioned.

The quake was detected at a depth of 37km (23 miles), the US Geological Service mentioned on Friday.

“Based mostly on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are potential for coasts inside 1,000 km (620 miles) of the earthquake epicentre,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Heart mentioned in a bulletin.

It urged individuals in threatened coastal areas to be alert.
